Aug 25: Things to Do With Old Quilts

My mom always seems to find the gold mine of old quilts when she goes to antique stores or auctions. I admit, I'm totally jealous of this. Keep in mind that she doesn't share these quilts with me, either, so I just get to look at them when I go visit (and think about how stingy she is with her goodies). *wink*

One thing to be on the lookout for is this: Even worn-out old quilts still have some uses in craft projects! You can cut out a favorite portion of the quilt and frame it in an old barn wood frame (SO cute!!!), or sew two large square pieces of a quilt into a smaller decorative pillow. If you have a particularly rugged old quilt, and can't think of a better use for it, sew it into a big fluffy pet bed!

I have such a hankering for old quilts- even when they're ripped or tattered. I just love them to pieces. I don't know if it's the tenderness of the work that went into them, or the stories they've been through, but I can't think of anything sweeter.

A quilt is a hug stitched out of fabric.

You can read about some other ideas for using antique quilts here. Keep in mind, I'm only suggesting these projects for the quilts that are too rag-tag to save for posterity. Don't go cutting up your grandmother's quilts!

good ideas, Zara has a really cute old quilt that a friend made for her when she was born, and it's just about worn to shredds! I had no idea what to do with it, but throwing it away was NOT an option! I like the idea of framing a good block or making a cute pillow! I think she'll like it too, her birthday is just around the corner, what d'ya know!

What a great idea! I have some old ones stored away at the inlaws house. I do not know the stories behind them as they are from a side of the family that is 'unknown' to us. I couldnt see throwing them out, and Im glad I didnt. Thanks Marie!
