I don't use shortening in my cooking: I have a thing about the hydrogenated oils. However, I am not above using vegetable shortening in my soap-making now and then, and as I was getting ready to toss this empty bucket into my recycling bin I had an epiphany. It's good little bucket. A useful bucket. Hmm....
I scrubbed it thoroughly with hot soapy water, dried it out well, and then covered the perimeter with fabric from my stash using my hot glue gun (no sewing!). I have oodles of twill tape in my sewing bins (for no apparent reason), and thus I used the tape to finish the edges on top and bottom, and to create a handle. I didn't purchase a single new thing. I'd call that rather thrifty.
Large grommets can be attached easily with the use of a Crop-A-Dile Eyelet & Snap Punch
which punched through the plastic bucket and layer of fabric as if it were nothing more than butter.
The project took less than twenty minutes, from start to finish (which includes the time I spent hand-washing it). Can't you just imagine this little bucket full of goodies for a friend? or being used to hold your scissors? knitting needles? yarn ball leftovers? Surely you can think of something sweet to put inside.

WOW! Probably one of the most thrifty projects yet. You never cease to amaze us out here, ya know?!?!
I am so impressed. That is super cool! It would be pretty to put a plant in as well or something floral if it was made without the handle :)
very cute and sweet!
