Yay I get to be first!!! Well my cheapo summer tip is after rinsing out dish soap bottles let the kids use them as squirt bottles for a water fight...you can even leave a little soap in there to have it double as a shower, then you have clean fun...

I HATE to heat up the kitchen during the summer by cooking. (Actually I don't really like cooking at any time!) Pull out that crockpot and throw dinner in first thing in the morning and have the rest of the day to play and still have dinner ready on time! Especially great for days when you are spending all day at the ball field, pool, or wherever....

Smoothie Pops! At our house we drink lots of smoothies! But in the summer we love to make extra and freeze them in popsicle molds. I love that they seem to take longer to melt because it was made from a thicker smoothie instead of runny liquid. This makes them not only a fun treat but hopefully less messy! I like that with kids. When we do green smoothies we call them Shrek Pops! The kids love them and don't seem to care that they are super good for them! ;)

How about planting something fun like watermelon, pumpkin, or sunflowers. Fast, big growing plants and less than $2 for a packet of seeds. :D

My summer cheapie tip is for my favorite salad:
one bag frozen black-eyed peas
one red onion
one can corn
two cans petite diced tomatoes
4-5 stalks celery

Drain the canned stuff, defrost the frozen stuff, diced the whole stuff. Mix together with 3-4 tablespoons of your fave dressing, or just EVOO and balsamic vinegar. Season with salt, pepper, Tabasco, chili powder. Eat until full!

Here is my favorite treat of the moment. Melt one bag of white chocolate chips, spread it over a sheet of parchment or wax paper, then sprinkle with 1/2 cup crushed lemon drops. I put the lemon drops in a heavy grade plastic bag, wrap it in a towel and hit it with a rolling pin until they are broken up. Let it harden and then break it apart. VOILA, lemon bark!

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but when I need to wash the car, I put the girls in their swimsuits and they get to help and get wet at the same time. I don't feel as if I'm wasting as much water and my car gets clean at the same time. :)

Camping in the backyard! Pitch a tent in the backyard, my kids love roasting marshmallows over a fire , spending a night under the stars and telling ghost stories. Perfect because you save on gas and avoid rattlesnakes & poison ivy!

Heather said...

whoo--I love the mug cozy! I'll have to make one (unless I win one, of course).

In the summer we get a lot of mileage out of picnics in the yard--but the key is that you really have to pack the picnic basket. Carrying a sandwich out of a plate doesn't count!

Tell you hubby Happy Birthday! A quick fun thing to make in the summer - Diet coke cupcakes served with ice cream! They are super low calorie and so good! Just take a chocolate cake mix of your choice and mix it with one can of Diet Coke - nothing else. Bake for the usual time as directed on the box! They are super yummy!

hmmm I think the easiest/quickest treat I can think of is a cheesy tortilla melt... simply unwrap one of those cheddar cheese sticks (like string cheese, but cheddar), roll it up in a tortilla, and then heat in the microwave for 30 seconds. Grating cheese is overrated. please pick me!

Thanks for such a lovely and generous giveaway!

Oooh, thanks for the pattern! If you're a morning person and don't have too many little ones around, garage sales can be fun to scope out, even just for looking at. Another fun cheap thing is that the museums in my city are free on Thursday nights... and usually air conditioned!

Rain Showers!
When it rains, put the kids in a bathing suit, give them shampoo & soap, and let them get clean outdoors. This works best when it's a warm day, usually in August, and there are no thunderstorms.

For an affordable and fun activity, I would suggest riding bikes through a small town with lots of open spaces, or even make a picnic lunch for everyone at the park or beach! That's always so much fun :)

Our all time favorite thing to do in summer is to pack a picnic breakfast and hit a favorite hike at the crack of dawn before it gets to hot. Our reward at the end is a fabulous stream side breakfast. The mug pattern is fabulous, I'll be linking!

I love your mug cozy! How cute. What a fun knitting project too. My tip is to save the juice from canned fruit and turn it into popsicles.

In the summertime, we love to go to the library & it's free! They have a reading club which is great for the kids. Both my kids have asthma, so indoor activities are really good for hot, smoggy days when it's just uncomfortable to be outside.

I'm excited to let the girls use the little kiddie pool in the yard this summer! Last year my youngest was too little to play, but old enough to know she was missing out on something. I am looking forward to watching them splash and play!

My tip is for my favorite salad:
1 cucumber, sliced
1 tomato,sliced
1/2 onion, sliced
feta cheese crumbles
balsamic vinegar
Layer in order. Sprinkle with feta and drizzle vinegar over top.
I cant wait for my garden to grow so I can eat this salad every day!

Thanks for the mug cozy pattern. It will make great Christmas gifts.

My favorite, easy and affordable summertime treat that everyone likes is the old fashioned root beer float.

Sunny Tuesday said...

Easy summer treat: Skewer grapes, roll them in sugar and stick them in the freezer.

We also like to pour the last little bits of juice into popsicle molds. When it's not enough for a cup, it's the perfect size for a popsicle. :) Also works great with Crystal Light and then it's only like a half a calorie.

The Tinsley Family said...

My super cheap summer idea is instead of buying a slip n slide, you can lay out black garbage bags and get them wet, and even put some soap on them.

QuiltChick said...

Hmmm, running through the sprinkler...I did it as a kid, and I still do it! So, when I get too hot after the commute home or mowing the yard, I run through the sprinkler like a kid! Makes my neighbors wonder about me, even better!

--ginger. said...

Love the cozy. I'm going to say ice cream + bananas. Let's not call it a SPLIT. Because that makes us feel pigish. Let's just say that when you add bananas to ice cream--sure, maybe some chocolate sauce and nuts, sure--then you get a WHOLE NEW ice cream experience. There's some ingredient that the bananas release from the ice cream, I think. p.s. Pick me! Pick me!

Liz B. said...

How very generous of you, and what a great pattern! My suggestion for a not-quite-quick, but fun and rewarding summer activity, is to make your own ice cream! Kids can get involved too; while you're mixing eggs and cream, they can be breaking up the candies or cookies that will go in the ice cream. Once it's in the freezer to set, take off to the playground/park/zoo/wherever you go to run around in the sun. By the time you get home you'll be exhausted and overheated and will have delicious cold ice cream to enjoy!

One thing I love for summer is the make-your-own-popsicle molds. I mean, you can turn any juice, soda, or just about any liquid into cool, yummy treats in no time :)

kikiverde said...

Enjoy your time off!

One of my favorite summer treats is fruit dip. You need a block of cream cheese, a medium-sized container of marshmallow fluff (the one that's between 7-10 ounces) (or ricemallow fluff) and a teaspoon of almond extract. Allow the cream cheese to soften for about 20 minutes or so, then using an electric mixer beat all of the ingredients together until smooth. It's delicious served with a fruit platter for the perfect ending to a summer picnic. I guarantee you that your guests will take a bite and exclaim "Oh my goodness, this is delicious- what is it?!?"

I throw all kinds of just overripe fruit into a "smoothie bag." When the bag is nearly full, I pull out the blender and mix the frozen fruit with yogurt, orange juice cubes (leftover juice frozen in an ice cube tray) and a bit of honey. Yummy and thick (because of the ice)!

And i forgot about the summer tip, stupid of me: how to catch bees in the garden. You cut an empty bottle of coke in two, the top you turn around and put in the lower half. You put some nice sugary liquid in it, bees will follow their urge for sugar, enter the bottle by the top and will not be abble to return, a bit sad maybe but bees stings are awful

My favorite summer time treat is iced coffee, so every morning my husband makes an extra pot. We freeze half in ice cube trays and chill the rest. In afternoon when we think we need something decadent, we mix the cold coffee with some cold milk (and maybe some almond syrup) and a couple coffee cubes and sit in the shade to chat about the day. So refreshing, easy cheap, and much less fat than an ice cream cone!

Sarah said...

We used to make ice cream watermelons by molding lime sherbet and raspberry sherbet (with chocolate chips for the seeds) together. Fun to make, fun to cut, and so delicious and refreshing!

The best snack for everyone is frozen grapes. Put them in a bowl and start your card and board games outside under a big shade tree on an old soft quilt.

A tip for summer, eh? Well, it gets really hot here and we don't have AC so I try to be mindful about which rooms I heat up. With the lights off, nothing running in the room, and the shades closed it actually stays pretty cool, so I try to use a limited number of rooms in the first half of the day and keep the others closed and waiting for the second half of the day.

Hello from Barcelona, Spain!!

I work in a public library, and we organize a craft afternoon once a month for children 3-7 years old, and this is the activity we're going to host this june: it's called "draw your twin". I will cut long pieces of craft paper, and make each child lie down, a child per piece. My colleagues and me (and hopefully some helpful parents too!!) will draw the silhouette of the kid on the craft paper, and then they will be able to fill in the inside of the silhouette! They can use pieces of yarn for the hair, different sorts of papers for the eyes, mouth, etc... colors to draw the clothes... Maybe I will take some buttons to attach, and we even have feathers in case they want to draw hats!!

I hope you like it. If you want to do it at home with children, you can also use scraps of fabric and hang the twin on the door of the dorm :-)

Cheers, and thanks for a great giveaway!!

Kite-flying in the park followed by homemade lemonade. Easy, quick, but memorable for the kiddos!

This is hard, being nearly winter here in Australia, so...I like to keep a big jug of tea in the fridge with lemon slices and mint from the garden floating in it. However, right now I prefer hot tea, so the mug cosy will come in very handy :)

The most fun to have on a summer day...is turning on the water sprinkler on the lawn & running thru it! Or using water to paint pictures onto crocrete!

I sure wish I could knit. That cozy is darling.

Thanks for the pattern! Very generous of you. One of our favorite summer activities is to have juice pops on the front porch. The other thing we do is water balloons. Not very environmentally friendly, but endlessly entertaining for 4 year olds. :)

Hello and THANKS for the chance to win your great bundle! For summer craft, we LOVE to paint the rocks in our landscaping...we just use Crayola paints and they nearly always wash away after a rain or two...and then its time to do it again! Its fun being at your site! Jenny

Wow! What a great giveaway! Thanks! I make Kool-Aid pops like my Mom did when I was little - You just make the Kool-Aid with half as much water and freeze in a little Tupperware Popsicle tray. Thanks for the cozy pattern too - it's so cute!

Picnic in the backyard is what we do (and we don't even have kids, so you are allowed to think we're crazy!). It's just nice to pack a basket and bring it under a tree, surrounded with flowers, spread a blanket and just relax.

I live in Kansas where it gets hot and very humid. During the summer months, I spend a lot of time in my quilt room which is in the coolest part of the house - the basement. When I have to cook dinner, I have a ton of crock pot recipes and I pull them out. Keeps my kitchen cooler, keeps me out of the kitchen and the hubby loves the recipes. Great giveaway!

A quick summer tip is to make jello knox blocks out of juice and geletin. THey are really simple to make and taste like summer. I also like to just sit outside with a book :) THank you for the great giveaway and for the free pattern.

Well, I dont' have kids yet but my nieces love to be in their kiddie pool outside in the backyard and they chase one another with little balloons filled with water that we all use here when it's Carnaval, during the summer!
Thank you for the great giveaway and the chance to win!

Great give away. My summer tip: when the weather gets to hot to play outside (we get some crazy hot days here) or if it's raining. Anyway, fill the sink with water and a little dishsoap, pull up a step stool and let the little ones "wash" dishes to their hearts content. This will keep my daughter occupied for a good solid hour.

Oh, what goodies! We do a lot of cold meals and snacks in warm weather. Lunch today? Hummus with a tray loaded with snap peas, carrots, apples, organges, crackers and granola bars. Yummy and perfect!

Thanks for the cozy pattern. Our favorite summer treat we call "Zoobies" (don't remember why) but we just take leftover fruit - strawberries, melon, bananas, blackberries, peaches....in a blender with sherbet and juice if needed - just mix and drink! No real recipe just what needs using up. We do put some of our fresh blackberries in the freezer just for the zoobies.

Tip ~ Bring a cooler in your car for drinks whenever you go anywhere. It will save you money from having to stop at convenient stores because kids are always thirsty while out!

Love the fabric. My probably repeated in here summer tip is to let the kids do fingerpaints outside in their swimsuits. I hate doing it inside-so much work. But outside it's easy-breezy!

Thanks for your generosity!
